Wednesday: State of the State conference call for Obama Biden campaign

May 15, 2012 - 10:14am
a { color:#008FC5; }
Friend --

I'm Obama for America's new Illinois State Director. I'm thrilled to be here, joining this team of supporters. I spent 2008 organizing for then-Senator Obama across the Midwest, and I am fired up for 2012.

We've got less than six months to go before November 6th. That means we've got to do everything we can to deliver a win for President Obama here at home, and pitch in to help our friends in neighboring states like Iowa and Wisconsin. They've been doing some great organizing, and we can support that work.

To help map out our efforts for the next six months, please join me and other supporters for a State of the State conference call at 7:00 p.m on Wednesday, May 16th.

On the call, we'll get an update about the organizing we've done so far, including recaps of last Saturday's day of action in Iowa and Wisconsin. In case you missed it, volunteer teams from Illinois traveled to our neighbor states to help register voters and talk with people about the President's accomplishments. It was a great weekend, and we're looking forward to many more like it!

We'll also talk about our broader national strategy, and how Illinois will help President Obama get the 270 electoral votes needed in November. There are new opportunities to get involved all the time, and we'll cover some of the most important ways you can help the campaign.

Sign up here to RSVP for Wednesday's call:
http://il.barackobama.com/Illinois-State-Director-Call

I'm looking forwarding to meeting you on the call this Wednesday, and working with you for the next six months as we organize to re-elect President Obama.

Talk to you soon,

Janelle

It's not okay for banks to do this to moms and their families

May 14, 2012 - 9:57am

Hope you've had a nice weekend and are enjoying this Mother's Day with your loved ones! We think economic fairness is important for everyone, and banks that push moms and families into unfair foreclosures make us feel like standing up and saying "Enough!" Check out this photo and share it if you feel the same way!

Don't forget to sign the Motion to Amend at the bottom of the page.
As persons, we would like to be wealthy and prosperous, a pursuit legitimized in our Constitution. An efficient way to create wealth is to develop a corporate machine, with organization and staff that will make money for us even when we are resting or absent. To the extent that a corporation is profitable—and modern corporations are extremely profitable—they have the wherewith-all to hire huge staffs of lawyers and advocates, some located outside the main corporate offices. For the first 75 years or so after the American Revolution, corporations existed only if they demonstrably served the public good.
About 126 years ago, corporate lawyers realized that corporations could become even more prosperous if they had special rights and privileges, such as those available to natural persons under the US Constitution. On May 10, 1886 in the Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific Railroad case, the Supreme Court gave corporations as “persons,” equal protections under law, as provided by the 14th Amendment. Since then, there has been case after case in which the Court expanded the Constitutional "rights" of corporations.
Today corporate advocates argue that the public good is met if a corporation makes money for its owners. Supposedly, the public good will be guaranteed by a sufficient number of corporations filling niches of need, together with a “free” market that inspires a competitive work ethic. The above guarantee was refuted by the 2007-2008 catastrophic failure of the big banks, their subsequent bailout with taxpayer funds, their supposed “recovery;” and the absence of a subsequent recovery of the larger economy.
Most recently, in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Comm. (2010), the Supreme Court gave the most explicit justification of corporate personhood (asserted without proof): Corporations are Persons with constitutionally given rights of free speech under the 1st Amendment.  Also, without proof, they asserted that Money is the same as Speech. Combine these two ideas with the huge financial resources of corporations, and it’s clear the Supreme Court has given corporations the right to unlimited spending in political elections, enabling  wealthy corporations to have a determining influence on the outcome of elections.
On this anniversary of Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific Railroad, will you do your part for real democracy by signing and finding ten people to sign a Motion to Amend the constitution which denies that corporations are people and money equals speech? If each of us collects 10 signatures, we would reach over a million people! Such a turnout would encourage the next steps toward a constitutional amendment.

Dupage, join me in DC on June 18

Dear Dupage,

Let's get together, shall we? I've noticed you're one of the most active, dedicated members of the Rebuild the Dream community.

I'd love for you to come to the "Take Back the American Dream" conference, June 18-20 in Washington, D.C., where thousands of movement leaders, students, teachers, union members, and grassroots activists will gather.
As progressives, we all need to take the time to share, collaborate, and strategize together.

Join Gov. Howard Dean, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Katrina vanden Heuvel, Paul Krugman, Melissa Harris-Perry, Drew Westen, Sandra Fluke, Ai-jen Poo, Rebuild the Dream's very own Van Jones, and more extraordinary thinkers and leaders.

Click here to register for the 2012 "Take Back the American Dream" conference!

Last year, the movement for the 99% transformed the political debate in this country. From Wisconsin to Occupy Wall Street, we exposed corporate greed and fraud, and took a stand for the middle class, working families, and poor folks. We're reclaiming our economy and our democracy.

This Spring, the 99% got organized. An unprecedented collaboration of progressive groups trained 100,000 activists for nonviolent action, and then organized historic, mass protests at corporate shareholder meetings across the country, like Wells Fargo and Bank of America. (Those actions continue! Stay tuned for the Sallie Mae shareholder action later this month.) We've kept issues like solutions for struggling homeowners, student debt, and tax fairness front-and-center.

It's time to regroup, reflect, and get ready for the second half of 2012.

Register now. You get a special discounted rate as part of the Rebuild the Dream community.

Let's forge the strategies to win a progressive majority in the 2012 election, and create an unstoppable mandate for change that goes far beyond the timid agendas from most Washington politicians.

And let's make sure we're ready to win not only in November, but also in December. Congress will make historic, critical decisions in December, right on the heels of the presidential election. Can we finally repeal the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy? Can we stop cruel cuts to basic services that millions of us rely on to survive? Can we win a plan for a real economic recovery -- a budget for the 99%, not the 1%?

Let's get ready to win in November AND December.

Rebuild the Dream is a proud partner organizing this summit for the 99%, with the Campaign for America's Future, Progressive Majority, and other groups.

Join us as we set a bold, winning agenda -- for this crucial election and for the battles to come -- to win real change.

We can't do it without you. See you in Washington.

Thanks,
Natalie Foster and the Rebuild the Dream Team

Wisconsin bombshell

To: "Daniel Stafford" <aquarianm@gmail.com>

BREAKING: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel just dropped a bombshell:

A filmmaker released a video Thursday that shows Gov. Scott Walker saying [in early 2011] he would use "divide and conquer" as a strategy against unions.

Walker made the comments to Beloit billionaire Diane Hendricks, who has since given $510,000 to the governor's campaign...

Walker told the public his actions were not about union busting, but this reveals the truth. It's shaking up the recall election today.

Click here to watch the video -- then, chip in $3 to help us recall this awful governor next month.

We're running ads right now in Madison urging voters to recall Walker. We're aiming to expand to Green Bay and other media markets next week.

The election is less than 1 month away -- please chip in $3 today to help recall Scott Walker.

Thanks for being a bold progressive.

Illinois Republicans circumvent campaign contribution limits

May 11, 2012 - 9:59am
Take a look at this article by Doug Ibendahl on how Republicans are passing money from local county organizations to the Illinois Republican Party. By giving money to smaller organizations at the local and county levels, Republicans are circumventing Illinois campaign contribution limits.

As Democrats, we fight for campaign finance reform because we know the influence that money and big business have on our elections. A fair election means a transparent election and what the Republican Party of Illinois has done here is just the opposite. Campaign limits are important because they level the playing field for candidates and for parties.  Regulating the money that goes into elections allows voters to decide based on the issues and the candidate.  It means that you can't simply cater to the wealthiest voters in America and be bankrolled indefinitely.

Let's make our elections truly fair and stop these practices.

We will bring together culture, ideas, and action and demonstrate our politics of, by, and for the 99%. Call Sen. Kirk: Don't sell out Illinois's students

May 8, 2012 - 10:35am

Call Sen. Kirk: Stop the doubling of student loan interest rates.

Call Sen. Kirk: Don't vote against Illinois's students. Dear Friend,
Just a few weeks ago, we asked CREDO Action members to engage on the explosive issue of student loans. The response has been amazing with activists taking more than 319,000 actions to stop Congressional Republicans from doubling the interest rates on federally subsidized student loans. Thanks in part to your activism the issue has become a hot topic in our national political conversation. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid spoke up on behalf of students on the Senate floor recently1, and he has now scheduled a crucial vote in the Senate for tomorrow on the Stop the Student Loan Interest Rate Hike Act of 2012, legislation which prevents the interest rate on federally subsidized student loans from doubling this summer.2 In advance of tomorrow's vote, we need to make sure Sen. Kirk know that his constituents expect him to vote for the interests of students and recent graduates who rely on federal student loans. Call Sen. Mark Kirk: Tell him to support the Stop the Student Loan Interest Rate Hike Act of 2012 to keep the interest rates on federally subsidized student loans from doubling this July. Click here for a simple script and the number to call. Now is the time to put on a full court press. Call Sen. Kirk's office and ask him to put aside partisanship and vote in support of the Stop the Student Loan Interest Rate Hike Act. We believe Sen. Kirk should heed calls to keep the interest rate at their current low level since he voted with the Democrats for the College Cost Reduction and Access Act in 2007, which reduced the interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans incrementally over four academic years, from 6.8 percent at the time to the current 3.4 percent. Sen. Kirk needs to keep supporting our students and their families. The Stop the Student Loan Interest Rate Hike Act covers the cost of extending the low interest rates for one more year by eliminating a tax loophole that would prevent wealthy Americans making over $200,000 per year to avoid paying their fair share of Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes.3 For example, in 2010, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich legally exploited this S corporation loophole to avoid paying $69,000 in Medicare taxes, while reporting $444,327 of his earnings as wages from Gingrich Holdings and Gingrich Productions and classifying another $2.4 million as profits or dividends.4 In contrast, House Republicans are promoting a legislation that covers the cost of extending the low interest rates by eliminating basic health care prevention programs. President Barack Obama has already issued a veto threat against the extreme proposal of the House Republican Leadership.5 With the Republican bill dead on arrival, supporting the Democratic Legislation in the Senate should be a common sense, no-brainer, non-partisan action in favor of Illinois's students for Sen. Kirk. Call Sen. Mark Kirk: Tell him to support the Stop the Student Loan Interest Rate Hike Act of 2012 to keep the interest rates on federally subsidized student loans from doubling this July. Click here for a simple script and the number to call. Your calls will matter as your effort to date has turned the burden of student loans into one of the hottest topics this political season. Let's make sure that Sen. Kirk get the message that he cannot sell out Illinois's students by embracing the extreme right wing agenda of the House Republican leadership. Thank you for taking action to make sure that all students can afford a higher education — including those from Illinois's working class families. Murshed Zaheed, Deputy Political Director

One simple thing you can do to help COD faculty under attack.

May 7, 2012 - 1:34pm
No question COD is an asset to DuPage County, but the faculty is under seige, working without a contract for a year. In 2009, many members of the DuPage Democrats pushed hard to elect those who would protect these same teachers. At a recent rally, our own Bob Peickert lent his support to their cause echoing that effort. You can lend your voice and support as well.

Attend the COD Board of Trustees meeting this Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in Room 2800 of Student Resources Center on the COD campus.

What Do DuPage Dems Need to Know About Problems at the College of DuPage?

COD teachers, who have been working without a contract for a year, recently held a rally featuring speakers from the IEA, local teachers' unions, and DuPage Democrats Chairman Bob Peickert. Faculty association representatives have gone on record accepting a financial offer made in the press by the college president and have agreed to a number of other significant concessions. Nonetheless, contract negotiations have stalled and were recently placed in the hands of a federal mediator.

College of DuPage has long been a well-regarded public resource - an accessible, affordable route to an education for everyone in District 502. Especially for a two-year college, COD has attracted a remarkably high quality of faculty because of its strong reputation and innovative programs. Of late, though, under the control of President Robert Breuder and Board Chairman David Carlin, COD tuition has risen steadily, and financial policies have made it harder for working people to meet payment deadlines and register for classes. At the same time, the administration of the college is trying to water down educational quality by increasing class sizes and teaching load, as well as taking coordination of academic programs out of faculty hands.

COD's campus looks really pretty these days: millions have been lavished on landscaping, including mature trees and fountains, and you can't miss all the new buildings. COD has a whole layer of administrators earning salaries over $150k; furthermore, Breuder is the highest paid community college president in the state. So, if COD has money to spend, why is the administration so reluctant to bargain with the faculty association? Board Chairman Carlin is Joe Walsh's District Director and a Tea Party loyalist who has his own political aspirations. Breuder, the current college president, touts a corporate approach to managing the college, centralizing decision-making authority and eroding the role of faculty in academic affairs. Harper College is still reeling from his "leadership" style. These men are not interested in working with faculty to pursue the educational mission of COD. They want to bust a union and many of their contractor friends win if they do.

What can DuPage Dems do?
●    Attend the next College of DuPage Board of Trustees meeting at 7pm on Thursday, May 10, 2012.
●    Consider running for Chairman Carlin's board seat, which is up for election in 2013 in a nonpartisan race.
●    "Like" the faculty association's Facebook page and share our posts widely.
●    Read more about the issues at the links below!

Professor Emeritus David McGrath puts the current strife at COD in the context of COD's history and the current anti-labor efforts of Wisconsin's governor.
COD Faculty Association President Glenn Hansen responded after Carlin accused faculty of holding grades over the heads of students who demonstrated or made statements in support of faculty at the April 19 Board of Trustees meeting.
Professor of Photography Jeff Curto reveals the College administration's use of public resources to attack the faculty association, as well as debunking the myth that teaching in an art studio has less value than teaching in a lecture class.
Associate Professor of English Karin Evans explores the impact of a heavier teaching load on instructors in freshman English, a core general education requirement serving all students who earn associates degrees or transfer to four-year colleges all over Illinois.

Bank vs. America: Wednesday in Naperville

May 7, 2012 - 11:36am

There's a showdown between the 99% and Bank of America next week. People are protesting at the the BofA shareholders meeting in Charlotte and at solidarity actions nationwide. There's a protest in Naperville at 4:30 PM. Can you make it?

RSVP for the Protest!
Dear MoveOn member, Given recent history, Bank of America should be rebranded "Bank vs. America." While our economy tanked, BofA made billions in profits by dodging taxes, illegally foreclosing on homes, and squeezing customers—hitting communities of color especially hard.1  But this spring, tens of thousands of people were trained to fight back against Bank of America and big corporations. Next week, at the annual shareholders meeting in Charlotte, NC, local progressives are blending street theatre with protest to get the attention of top BofA executives and the media. BofA's so nervous about bad publicity that the city of Charlotte will enforce a draconian protest law that allows police to search someone for having a bike helmet or magic marker.2 We know that Bank of America is susceptible to public pressure. (Remember when they tried to hike debit fees?)3 If we all speak out against BofA on the same day, we can ratchet up the pressure by drawing more media attention and scrutiny to them. That's why, as part of the 99% Spring, progressives are organizing protests at Bank of America branches throughout the country on May 9.  There's a protest in Naperville on Wednesday, May 9 at 4:30 PM. Can you make it? Yes, count me in for the protest! To show Bank of America that we won't take more of the same, May is "Move Our Money" month for the 99%. We're withdrawing our hard-earned money and switching to community banks or credit unions instead. Big Banks stand to lose $185 BILLION over the next year because of customer defections—and BofA is particularly vulnerable.4 Bank CEOs aren't responsive to pleas for help from struggling homeowners—but we'll get their attention when we put a dent in profits and a spotlight on their greed.     Can you stand with the 99% at a Bank of America protest in Naperville on Wednesday, May 9, at 4:30 PM?   Yes, I want to RSVP! Thanks for all you do. –Elena, Victoria, Ryan, Wes, and the rest of the team P.S.
